Maurice King Biography cont..... THE MOTOWN YEARS |
1963
Diana Ross, the Supremes, and the Temptations were working in Mr. King's private studio when Berry Gordy Jr. invited him to work at 'Motown'. His assignment was to work with, and teach, Gladys Knight & the 'Pips'; Martha Reeves and the Vandellas; Smokey Robinson and the Miracles; Marvin Gaye; Tammy Terrell; the Marvellettes; the Spinners; the Four Tops; and many others.
Maurice King's title with 'Motown' was Executive Musical Director of Artist Development. He was the "trouble shooter" when the acts encountered musical problems on the road. He was assistant to Director Harvey Fuqua. The Artist Development team included Johnnie Allen and Gene Kee as arrangers and vocal coaches, Maxine Powell was in charge of deportment of the female artists, and Cholly "Pops" Atkins was the choreographer
The majority of the 'Motown' acts appeared on numerous network TV shows and Maurice King was guest conductor with the bands of Ray Block( The Ed Sullivan Show ), Les Brown( The Dean Martin Show ), and Doc Severinson ( The Tonight Show). He also conducted for the 'Cher' Show and the Tom Jones Show. Maurice King was known and well received at the world famous "COPA" in New York. I guess the most memorable appearance was with Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. As Martha Reeves recalls, " Mr. King sent someone to buy two small flashlights, opened the show in complete darkness conducting the orchestra with the lit flashlights as batons".
